Level 1

Functional Skills English Level 1

Equivalent to GCSE grade 2 to 3 (E/D)

A strong foundation in everyday English. Ideal if you are returning to study, need Level 1 for an apprenticeship, or want to build confidence before Level 2.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Functional Skills English Level 2 is recognised as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) and Level 1 sits at GCSE grade 2 to 3. Both are on the government's Regulated Qualifications Framework and are accepted by most employers, apprenticeship providers and universities.

If you need the qualification for nursing, teaching, university or a job that asks for GCSE equivalent English, you need Level 2. If you are building confidence or your apprenticeship requires Level 1, start there and progress. If you are unsure, contact us and we will help you choose before you enrol.

Functional Skills English covers three components: reading, writing, and speaking and listening. You complete an assessment in each component to gain the full qualification, and we guide you through booking each part.

Yes, completely. You can join live tutor led Zoom classes or study self paced with four months of access, and you can sit your assessments online from home via webcam or in person at our Brighton centre.

No. Our Level 1 and Level 2 courses include the accredited assessments in the price. If you have already prepared elsewhere, you can book an exam only slot instead.
