How to Get a CSCS Card

If you want to work on a construction site in the UK, a CSCS card is almost always essential. It shows that you have the right training and knowledge to work safely, and without it most sites will not let you through the gate. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get your Green CSCS Labourer Card, along with answers to the most common questions.

What is a CSCS card and why do I need one?

The CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card proves that you have the qualifications and training needed to work safely on a construction site. It’s designed to keep both you and others safe, and for that reason, the majority of UK building sites require it.

Step 1: Complete the Health & Safety Qualification

The first step is completing the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. This is a two-day course that we book and pay for on your behalf. It covers all the essentials, including:

  • Recognising site hazards and carrying out risk assessments
  • Correct use of PPE and understanding safety signs
  • Manual handling techniques
  • Basics of working at height

Step 2: Pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test

Once you have completed the qualification, you’ll need to pass the CITB HS&E Test. This is a 45-minute multiple-choice exam held at an approved test centre. We’ll cover the cost of booking one attempt for you. If you don’t pass the first time, you can resit the test — but you’ll need to pay for any additional attempts yourself.

Step 3: Apply for the Green CSCS Labourer Card

When you have both the qualification and the CITB test pass, we’ll apply for your card. We’ll also cover the application cost and the card fee. To apply, you’ll need to provide:

  • Your CITB test pass details
  • Proof of your qualification

Once approved, the card is valid for two years.

Funding and Costs

Funding is available for:

  • Adults aged 19+
  • Young people aged 16–19 who live in the BN1, BN2, BN3, or BN41 postcode areas

*Further eligibility rules apply. Check your eligibility here.

If you don’t qualify for funded training, you can take the course commercially for £199. This includes:

  • The Health and Safety course and learning
  • One Health & Safety exam
  • One CITB HS&E test
  • The Green CSCS card application fee

If you need to resit:

  • The Health & Safety exam costs £25
  • The CITB test costs £22.50

With the training, test booking, and card application arranged and funded (if you’re eligible), the process is straightforward. Once you’ve got your Green CSCS Labourer Card, you’ll be ready to work safely and confidently on site.
