Success in Surrey: How SWAPs Are Empowering Residents into Meaningful Employment
At Functional Skills UK, we’ve seen first-hand how the right training at the right time can change lives. That’s exactly what’s happening across Surrey, where we’ve successfully delivered over 14 Sector-based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs) across 11 local Jobcentres.
By working closely with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Surrey County Council, we’ve been able to offer residents more than just training—we’ve opened doors to real jobs and real futures.
So, What Exactly Are SWAPs?
SWAPs are short, focused programmes designed to help people prepare for jobs in specific sectors. They include pre-employment training, skills relevant to a particular industry, and a guaranteed job interview at the end.
They’re free, flexible and fast—and in Surrey, we’ve shaped them to match the needs of sectors like digital, hospitality, retail, and customer service. Whether someone’s starting from scratch or looking to switch careers, a SWAP offers a clear path forward.

We’ve worked with brilliant employers like Thorpe Park and Nando’s, who don’t just offer interviews—they help shape the training so it reflects what the workplace is actually like. It means our learners are walking into interviews ready to shine.
