Course description

The Functional Skills English course helps learners develop practical English skills for work, education, and daily life. It covers writing, reading, and effective communication, with real-world activities to build confidence and proficiency. Suitable for entry level up to Level 2, it benefits those seeking to improve their English for employment, further education, or personal development.

Functional Skills English will cover: 

  • Writing: Producing various documents (emails, letters, reports, articles), mastering spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure, and writing for different purposes and audiences.
  • Reading: Understanding and responding to various texts, identifying main points, details, and purposes of a text, and comparing and summarizing information.
  • Speaking, Listening, and Communication: Participating in discussions and conversations, presenting information and ideas clearly, and using formal and informal language appropriately.

Further Information

In order to gain a Functional Skills English qualification, you are required to complete and pass a reading exam, a writing exam and a speaking and listening assessment.  Once you have passed the exams, you will receive a certificate from the awarding body as proof of the new skills you have learnt!

Exam options:

We can offer exams at our centre in Brighton. These can be paper-based or done on a computer. We also offer the option of remote exams that can be taken from home but please note, there are some prerequisites and conditions that must be followed. These are also only available for Level 1 or 2 exams.

✓ Aged 19 or over

✓ Living in England 

✓ Lived in the UK or EU/EEA for the last 3 years

✓ Not currently enrolled on any other government funded course or started another application for one

Please note: London, West Midlands, Liverpool, Manchester, South Yorkshire, Bristol, and Bath are not funded via online enrolment.
