Course description

If you are passionate about supporting children’s learning and want to start a rewarding career in education, our Award in Preparing to Work in Schools is the perfect starting point. This introductory course provides the foundational knowledge you need to understand the school environment and the vital role of school support staff.

This course is designed to give you a comprehensive overview of what it’s like to work in a school. Key areas include:

    • The School Environment: Understand how different types of schools are organised, the roles and responsibilities of staff, and the purpose of school policies and procedures.
    • Child and Young Person Development: Learn the core principles of how children develop, and understand how to support their learning and well-being.
    • Safeguarding: Cover the essential principles of safeguarding the welfare of children and young people, a critical aspect of working in any school.
    • Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion: Explore the importance of promoting equality and respecting diversity in a school setting.
    • Health and Safety: Understand the key health and safety requirements for a school environment, including your own responsibilities.

    Enrol for free in either a live, tutor-led course or a self-paced online course. Both are fully funded if you’re eligible.

    Our course is delivered in person by experienced tutors who will guide you through each topic. You will be provided with a comprehensive workbook and take part in group discussions and activities to help you prepare for your assessment and for working in a real school environment.

    • Assessment: This qualification is assessed through a portfolio of coursework. There is no final exam.
    • Entry Requirements: There are no formal entry requirements for this course, making it the perfect accessible first step.
    • Work Placement: This is a knowledge-based qualification, so a work placement is not required to complete the course.
