Course description

The Counselling Skills course is designed to introduce participants to the fundamental skills and techniques used in counselling, providing a strong foundation for those interested in supporting others through effective communication and empathetic listening. This course covers essential counselling principles, including active listening, questioning techniques, and building rapport, along with an understanding of the ethical considerations in a counselling context.

Participants will learn how to create a safe and supportive environment for individuals to explore their thoughts and feelings. The course focuses on developing practical skills that can be applied in various settings, whether in professional counseling roles, social services, education, or personal relationships. Learners will also explore different counseling approaches and theories, gaining insights into how these can be applied to real-life situations.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the skills to support others through effective counselling techniques, fostering personal growth and well-being.

Delivery

The course will be completed online via our e-assessor platform. The duration of the course is seven weeks and is designed to be completed around your work and home life commitments. All deadlines for your course will be shown in your online course platform once you are enrolled to keep track.

This course is made up of four units:

  • How core counselling skills can be used in a counselling relationship and in other helping activities.
  • How counselling theory underpins the use of counselling skills.
  • How the ethical framework informs your own use of counselling skills.
  • How to develop skills and qualities in the future.

This course is delivered at an introductory level and is designed to provide a foundation level of knowledge in counselling skills. Further study would be required to practice as a qualified counsellor, including in-person placements.

✓ Not currently enrolled on any other government funded course or started another application for one

Please note: London, West Midlands, Liverpool, Manchester, South Yorkshire, Bristol, and Bath are not funded via online enrolment.
